Now (2010/11) I suffer the problem very often again. I can only work with external keyboard and touchpad. Nothing that you can find on the internet to adress this problem (SMC/ PRAM Reset, the “ribbon” trick) has worked for me. And the crazy thing is there is no way to just “restart” the driver for the touchpad. It should be possible – but I havn’t found anything. It should be so easy to make it work again with just a command.

Apple has repaired already and the problem came back! I think there is no better prove that this MBP generation has a serious hardware design flaw. And there seem to be hardware flaws in Apple products (flickering displays, 1 gen iPhone with not working delete keys, etc.) I wonder why Steve Jobs is so proud about having software and hardware coming from the same hands. It does not make anything better.

I had problems with Windows, too – that was one small reason for switching to Apple in 2005. But it’s not quite better with Apples hardware+software model. Now I’m “locked in” (by my own choice: I will not go back with the desktop to Windows or Ubuntu/Debian. I LOVE OS X for so many reasons) and so I need to upgrade to my next MBP – but I really fear to buy new hardware from Apple again. After all my research I have seen how many problems are there even with the latest Apple products… I totally lost my confidence in the shiny Apple world of “good hardware and software” out of one hand.

Buying from Apple means to pay premium prices. I’m willing to do so – but I expect to have best hardware and best service. Maybe It’s just me who had bad luck? Make your research – the forums are full of problems like these. I.e. flickering displays, non functioning keyboards even on iPhones (the Delete key problem). Antenna-gate etc. Countless. (Yes I know I don’t have the full picture – I need to know how many percentage of customers face problems like I have – but take into account that I’m frustrated at the moment of writing…) If I could decide today I would not buy my Hardware from Apple again. But there is no choice because Apple wan’t OS X to run only on own hardware – that’s the main drawback in the Apple universe…

So I’ll pull my credit card with the next upgrade of the MBP line and hope I’ll have better hardware next time. And guess what? I’ll take Apple care for 3 years just because of murphy to make sure my next MBP will flawless for at least 3 years.

PS: My wife’s unibody MacBook seems to have no problems. Maybe there is hope…

Ich glaube viele Apple Benutzer kennen das Tool aber nicht oder können vielleicht nicht viel damit anfangen. Vielleicht ändert sich das nun, denn Lars Blumberg erläutert in seinem wunderschön gemachten Screencast sehr anschaulich die Bedienung und Funktionsweise des Apple Automators. Da dieses Video im Rahmen eines Seminars “End user programming” entstanden ist, geht Lars Blumberg zu Beginn auf das Pipe-Konzept ein auf dem der Automator beruht, bevor ein Beispiel erläutert wird.

Im dritten Teil des Screencasts wird die Programmierung einer eigenen Erweiterung (Action) für den Automator mit Xcode demonstriert. Alle Schritte sind in dem liebevoll gemachtem Video ausführlich dokumentiert, so dass ich hoffe dass Anwender und Scripter neugierig gemacht werden sich einmal etwas ausführlicher mit Apples Automator auseinander zu setzen.

You can see that some of these threads are very mature. It’s no new problem. And nothing can fix it. This is a huge problem like so many other probems that you might face when you buy apple hardware & software… I wonder why Apple is not able to fix this. A keyboard should never ever stop working. It’s so basic. This is simply not acceptable.

Even with the latest upgrade to OS X 10.5.6 the same problems is annoying me… When I switched from Windows to Mac I was so happy to get away from a never ending series of blue screens and frozen OS. I found a much better and stable OS with OS X with a wonderful GUI. But today I feel in the same situation as same years ago… while friends sticked to Windows for the mainstream desktop claim to have a rock solid windows now… Why is it me? Is it because I ran much more exotic software (heavy IDEs, VMware etc.) than the avarage user? That’s why I`m in a crisis with Apple and OS X now… Switch back to Windows? – never. Maybe a Debian based system for the desktop… I see no real options once you have seen the smartness of OS X but with the problems I have these days; it’s no fun anymore…

Same problem here! When I close the lid and open it up again, the keyboard and touchpad do work again. But only as long as I use them frequently. When I let keyboard and touchpad alone for a while (one minute or so) both are frozen again.

When this bug is there, I can repeat the sleep and awake method with the same result again and again. Nothing in the logs.

When touchpad and keyboard are frozen, I can still use the bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

Only a restart (reboot) will help me out.

I think it was not there before 10.5.5.
I have no idea what causes the problem.
I’m using VMware Fusion. Perhaps this might be a problem when running it was a WinXP VM. (when running debian in a VM it seems to be stable).

This is AGAIN a big bug from Apple software (this seems to be no hardware bug).
I also suffer LED backlid bug (stripes from time to time).
I also suffer NVidia Softwarebug. (Graphic intense apps lead to crash. Especially when running with extern display on DVI).

Seriously disappointed now! (My old G4 powerbook was more stable).

Apple has tons of dollars at the bank. I suggest to spend some money into keeping quality high! Since the iPhone is out, so many feel it’s going the wrong way with computers (let alone the missing option for mate displays).

Nein: wieso erlaubt sich Apple beim Display ein NoGo? Es gibt nur noch verspiegelte Displays. Keine Option mehr für entspiegelte Displays wie es bisher zumindest beim MacBook Pro noch der Fall war. Ich hatte das ja schon ziemlich genau vor 2 Jahren befürchtet dass Apple dem Trend folgt und die entspiegelten Displays skippen könnte; nun hat Apple es leider wahr gemacht.

Vielleicht hilft ja die online Petition zur Wiedereinführung nicht spiegelnder Displays. Also bitte Mitmachen!

Zum Glück ist mein aktuelles MacBookPro4,1 (Penryn 2.5Ghz, 4GB) erst Anfang 2008 angeschafft worden und somit quasi das letzte seiner Art (mit entspiegeltem Displays) und kann von der Performance her noch sehr gut mit den aktuellen Schmickspiegeln mithalten, so dass ich etwas längeren Atem haben die Zeit zu überbrücken, bis Apple wieder zur Vernunft kommt. Abzuwarten ist wohl auch wie stabil sich die neue Plattform erweist – immerhin hat Apple den Schachzug unternommen nicht mehr einen Intel-Shipsatz zu verwenden und setzt auf einen Nvidia-Chipsatz.

Vielleicht etwas spät für meine bescheidene Wunschliste – aber da Apple eh nicht auf mich hört, ist’s ja auch egal, wann ich die poste:

1. Wieder ein hochwertigen analog Audio out. Mindestens so gut wie beim G4. Das gepiepse beim aktuellen MacBook Pro ist unzumutbar und kann nur durch den optischen Ausgang mit externem DAC umgangen werden. Oder wenn’s etwas protabler sein muss, setzt man eine USB/Firewall Soundkarte ein – aber das kann’s ja nicht sein für ein premium Notebook, was gerade in Musikerkreisen (bisher) gerne eingesetzt wurde.
2. 3G – why doesn’t Apple build 3G into its current notebooks? Die USB Adapter nerven, gerade wenn man unterwegs ist.

5. Solid State HDD zu vernünftigen Preisen auch für’s MacBook Pro

Aus Benutzersicht ist das iPhone zZ noch das deutlich rundere Paket. Zumal wenn man auf dem Desktop OS X einsetzt, drängt sich das iPhone geradezu auf. Allerding sieht es aus Entwicklersicht ganz anders aus: wenn man nicht in das geregelte (geschlossene) System von Apple eintauchen will (und Objective C nicht einsetzen mag), bleibt nur der Android.

Ich vermute, dass Android zum Start kein Renner wird und sich womöglich ähnlich schwer tun wird wie Linux den Desktop zu erobern. Aber immerhin hat das iPhone nun einen mächtigen Gegenspieler (mit sehr starken Konzepten) und die OpenSource Entwickerkommunity hat endlich ein SDK 1.0 für Android. Es wird spannend…

Das Problem wird in einem sehr langen Thread auf Apples Diskussionsforum von vielen betroffenen Anwendern besprochen – aber es gibt keine einzige Stellungnahme von Apple. Was macht es für Apple für einen Sinn, ein offzielles Support-Forum bereitzustellen, dann aber die hilfesuchenden Benutzer mit totaler Ignoranz zu ärgern? Im Falle des NVIDIA-Treiberproblem sogar mehr als ein Jahr. Wenn Apple so viel Geld für Werbung ausgibt könnte ich mir vorstellen, dass auch etwas Geld für einen Mitarbeiter bereitsteht, der an dieser Stelle den Kontakt zu ratsuchenden Kunden herstellt.

Schlimmer noch: Apple ignoriert das Problem ganz offenbar – in den Apple Shops werden betroffene Geräte einfach ausgetauscht (wie auch beim NVIDIA Bug!) – die allermeisten Anwender stellen dann wenig später verärgert fest, das das Problem auch bei dem neuen Geräten weiterhin auftritt…

Warum gibt man deutlich mehr Geld für ein Apple Notebook aus? Weil Qualität seinen Preis hat… Aber was ich jetzt mit meinem neuen MacBook Pro erlebe lässt mich doch extrem an dem Qualitätsstandard von Apple zweifeln. Der analoge Audioausgang von meinem Penryn MacBook Pro knartz und rauscht unerträglich (kein Einzelfall wie ich in anderen Foren gelesen habe; Links lediglich nicht parat). Viele LCD Displays sollen im unteren Bereich eine Gelbfärbung aufweisen. Und dann diese wirklich störenden und kritischen Fehler – und dann dazu nach meinem Verständnis keine akzeptable Informationspolitik von Apple. Wahrscheinlich ließe sich die aktuelle Situation nur entschärfen, wenn Apple den Verkauf seines OS nicht an die Hardware binden würde.

First time this error was seen on this machine: 05-20-2008

My MBP (Penryn) was in normal working mode (not in sleep, power connected, no external display connected) when the error set me in panic.
The display showed up the stripes and was darker as if it was dimmed – like it used to be when you do not touch the keys or move the mouse for a while. This was what I thought at first – but the vertical stripes shocked me and let me think this is a hardware error. Closing and reopening the lid fixed the problem (I did not know about the ctr-shift-eject hotkey at that moment).

After reading this thread I’t seems obvious that it is firmware/software related. At least i keep my fingers crossed that apple will bring a fix to this bug soon.

problem that I only can avoid, when I keep my external display unpluged (I work on the internal display for weeks and never had the Graphics channel exception again. But I doubt that those two problems are related.

Just my 0,02$: My old PowerBook G4 was much more stable. Apple, please don’t let us down and bring back again more reliable products to your consumers. Perhaps it would be a nice idea to hire some forum moderators to keep us informed with official statements from apple about those bugs that makes users filling up these forums/thread and their blogs.

To prove this is not a fake – I made this video in a hurry:

kernel[0]: NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel exception!

Da nur die GUI einfriert und man noch mit ssh einloggen kann, ist es zwar noch möglich, kontrolliert zu rebooten – aber dieses Problem ist für Anwender ähnlich schlimmer wie vieles was sich Microsoft zu den übelsten Windows95 Zeiten erlaubt hat. Traurig ist insbesondere, dass das Problem bereits sei längerem bekannt ist – selbst MS has schon an Apple gemeldet – und das nichts passiert.
Perfide ist, dass Apple offenbar mit einem Upgrade reagiert hat, dieses aber für viele erst ein Problem eingebracht hat. Ein Rollback der Patches ist von Apple nicht vorgesehen. Es gibt also kein Zurück. Findige User, die das nicht akzeptieren wollen, gehen den aufwändigen Weg, das OS neu zu installieren und dann den kritischen Patch nicht durchzuführen. Würde ich auch gerne machen – aber wie viele andere auch, habe ich eine Installations DVD vom OS wo der Patch bereits fester Bestandteil ist, so dass der Workaround über Neuinstallation nicht möglich ist. Tolll, was?

Und so viele haben das Problem – die Google-Einträge dazu werden immer mehr. Inszwischen gibt es neben der Foolding@Home App immer mehr Bereichte, wie man den Fehler zuverlässig reproduzieren kann. Der Fehler ist also zigfach nachvollziehbar – nur wird nichts getan.

Dummerweise gibt es auch wenige Bereichte wo das Problem durch Hardaustausch behoben worden sein soll. Und wenn man sich bei Apple mit dem Problem meldet würde man wohl zu hören bekommen, dass man dort die Hardware austauscht. Ich halte es aber für unwahrscheinlich, dass die Ursache bei der Vielzahl der Betroffenen tatsächlich bei defekter Hardware zu suchen ist. Es gibt auch berichte wo die Hardware ausgetauscht wurde und das Problem nicht behoben wurde. Bei mir läßt sich der Fehler seit mind. 2 Wochen zuverlässig vermeiden, wenn ich auf die Nutzung des externen Displays verzichte. Also ist es quatsch sich an die – in diesem Fall wahrscheinlich inkompetente – Apple Care zu wenden, weil man dort nach Standardverahren unsinnigerweise neue Hardware reinbekommt, die das Problem bei einer Vielzahl von Usern nicht löst.

Ich kann mich also nur dem lauterwerdenden Aufruf anschliessen: Apple tue bitte was! Und sei es, dass man NVIDIA auf die Finger klopft damit die den Treiber fixen. Sollte ich jemals behauptet haben, dass Apple den Vorteil bietet, dass man Hard- und Software aus einer Hand bekommt und man damit die Treiberhölle von Windows umgeht und insgesamt ein stabileres System bekommt – vergesst es!

Apple ist ja inzwischen wohl zu einer Firma geworden, die auch Computer verkauft und nebenbei noch ein Betriebsystem entwickeln – sie haben offenbar viele Resourcen in strategisch wichtige Projekte wie iTunes und iPhone gesteckt und das bekommen wir nun zu spüren. Zuletzt hatte Apple mich mit dem MacAir enttäuscht und auch das Release des überarbeiten MacBook Pro blieb hinter meinen Erwartungen zurück. Ich habe mir dann aber notgedrungen doch eines gekauft, weil ich mit meinem alten Powebook G4 dringend upgraden musste; ansonsten hätte ich auch gerne noch auf die nächste Generation gewartet.

Wie in der Anleitung beschrieben muss zunächst die aktuelle Dashboard-Software für Apple-Notebooks installiert werden. Die aktivierte SIM in den USB-Modem-Stick einlegen und den Stick in einen freien USB-Port einsetzen. Soweit beschreibt die Anleitung das Procedere wie zu erwarten war. Die Vodafone Mobile Connect Card UMTS war nun im OSX eingebunden – aber wie stelle ich eine Verbindung via WebSessions her?

Dazu fand ich auf der Seite “Installationshinweise zu Websessions” den Link zum Dokument: “Anleitung: Vodafone WebSessions mit Apple-Notebooks nutzen“. Genau das, was ich gesucht habe – aber leider steht auf der ersten Seite in fett: “Hinweis: Diese Anleitung gilt nicht für Apple MacBook Pro Notebooks mit Intel-Prozessor.” – boom – und leider gibt es auch keine Info, wo ich als MacBook Pro Nutzer denn eine alternative Dokumentation finde. Ich habe auf den Vodafoneseiten auch nichts gefunden… Daher habe ich mich weitestgehen an diese eigentlich für meinen Anwendungsfall nicht gültig Anleitung gehalten und APN auf event.vodafone.de umgestellt. Bei den Custom Connection-Settings habe ich noch auf “DE VodafoneD2 Websessions” umgestellt. Die unter Punkt 11 gezeigten Screenshots gelten so nicht mehr für Leopard. Die Angabe von Account-Name und Kennwort sind auch nicht erforderlich. Über die Systemeinstellungen/Netzwerk ist dann über den vom Dashboard erstellten Eintrag “Vodafone” eine Verbindung ins Internet über die Default-Configuration möglich. Der Requet einer beliebigen URL im Browser führt zur WebSessions-Seite so dass man das gewünschte Pakete buchen kann.

Aus meinem Büro heraus bekomme ich immerhin Werte die sogar leicht über meinem ehemaligen DSL Anschluss liegen:

Das ist sogar als Backup-Lösung für meine Kabel-Deutschland-Anbindung ausreichend.

Was noch etwas nervt ist die Komprimierung aller Bilder die Vodafone vornimmt – irgendwie soll man das über den Vodafone HighPerformance Client abstellen können. Ein Hinweis besagt: “Im Vodafone Dashboard ist der HighPerformance Client bereits integriert.” – aber entsprechende Einstellungsmöglichkeiten habe ich – bei der Mac-Version – bisher nicht entdeckt.
